Board Member


Matthew is an ecologist with over 16 years of professional experience. Matt received his bachelor's degree in Zoology from Michigan State University in 2002 prior to following his career path to Montana, and later to Georgia. Matt has worked for private environmental consulting companies, and both the Michigan and Montana natural heritage programs as a wildlife biologist. In 2012, Matt returned to his home state of Michigan where he currently works for an engineering and environmental firm.

Matt specializing in river and stream restoration, having been involved in designing or coordinating over 100,000 linear feet of streams and rivers in the Southeast and Midwest. As a wildlife ecologist Matt performs threatened and endangered species surveys, habitat assessments, and wildlife inventories for birds, small mammals, mussels, and bats, with a strong passion and knowledge of amphibian and reptile ecology. Mr. Gates also uses land surveying skills, GPS and drone technology, and GIS analysis in his work.

When Matt finds time away from work he enjoys fishing, playing basketball, and a newly found interest in rock-hounding.
